One Island, One Team, One Dream To Be Drug Free!
Local Youth Kick Off
Public Awareness Campaign
“Project Sticker Shock” to Target Adults who Provide Alcohol to Youth
The Grand Island “One Island” committee kicked off
“Project Sticker Shock”, a youth-led initiative to change adult attitudes
about selling and providing alcohol to minors at TOPS Markets, Family Express,
Rite-Aid, Aceti’s Wine & Spirits and Rose Liquor Store on Thursday June 5th.
This public awareness campaign will be taking place in stores countywide
this month. The project is
sponsored by the Erie County Council for the prevention of Alcohol and Substance
Abuse to bring attention to the issue during the busy party season of high
school proms and graduations.
Local youth from Grand Island are part of a movement of
youth county-wide working with participating stores to spread :Sticker Shock”
waves across Erie County in an effort to reach adults who might be tempted to
buy alcohol for youth under 21 who can’t but it legally themselves.
The blue and green stickers are placed on beer cases and provide a strong
reminder that “Providing Alcohol to Minors is Illegal”, fines are up to
$1,000.00 and or up to one year in jail.
Adults need to set a better example for kids, “When
adults supply alcohol to youth it sends us a very mixed message”.
Underage drinking is not a teen problem, but a community problem.
Adults, youth, law enforcement and retail stores all need to be part of
the solution.
“A strong community message is sent when our local businesses team up and take responsibility for speaking out against underage drinking”.
This
press event will kick-off at 2:30pm on Thursday June 5th at TOPS
Markets, 2140 Grand Island Blvd.
