Town of Grand Island Parks & Recreation Dept




The Parks & Recreation Department prepares for a busy Summer.


Independence Day activities including the Dick Bessel 2.3 mile Road race, “Kids Run” and the Parade will all be taking place on SATURDAY, JULY 3rd   this year starting at 9:00 AM. The VFW Post will be hosting their annual public picnic activities right after the parade while Martin’s Fantasy Island will conduct the fireworks show on Sunday, July 4th!


The 35th  running of the Dick Bessel Independence Day Race entries can be picked up at Tops GI, Town Hall, Library and Recreation office or go online at for electronic entry or to download an application. All applications are to be mailed back to the Orchard Park address no later than July 1st.  Entry fee is $15.00 for pre registration, $25.00 the morning of the race. No entry taken after 8:15 AM the day of the race. No entries taken at the recreation office.


Our 2nd Annual Wagon Decorating contest will take place on Thursday, July 1st during the Band Concert. Open to youths 4 – 8 yrs old are to bring their decorated wagon to the Town Hall Gazebo by 7:30 PM, judging at 8:00 PM, awards at 8:30. Judging based on overall look, patriotic theme and detail. Winners to participate in Saturday’s July 3rd parade.


Youth activities conducted by the Parks & Recreation will start June 26. Youth activities include tennis instruction, sports clinics, Swimming, roller hockey, Nature study, and arts & crafts. Registration for our summer programs will be Saturday, June 12. 10 AM – 12 Noon at the Nike Base community center. No pre –registrations are taken, a friend, neighbor or relative may register for you on that day. Registration fees are $20.00 per child per activity. Registrations will continue at the Recreation Office on Whitehaven Road, Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 3 PM. On Thursday, July 1st,  the Outdoor Band Concert series will start in the Marion Klingel Town Center at the Gazebo. Performing on Thursday will be “404” rock,
concerts are free and open to the public. Performances starts at 7:00 PM. The Concert series will resume on Tuesday evenings starting July 6, including Dixieland Jazz, Oldies, Big Band, Jazz, Country Western and Folk. Watch future notices for additional band concert activities, The Grand Island Historical Society will be doing a Root beer float special on July 13 with the “Friends of Harmony”.


Keep August 3 open for a wide range of activities for family participation as Grand Island celebrates “ National Night Out”. “Papa & Mama Root”  will be our featured music group that night. Various activities include the GI Fire Co., Local Law enforcement vehicles and equipment, crafts, food and FUN! More information to follow on activities as the August 3rd date approaches.


2nd Annual KAN-JAM Tournament will take place on Tuesday, August 3 during National Night Out. The tournament is open to youths 11- 19 years of age. Teams can be made up of all guys, all girls or mixed. No charge, registration starts at 7:00 PM. Competition begins at 7:30 PM, double elimination, trophies all in one night. Come out for a night of good music, competition and fun!


The Recreation Department assists in the “Paddles Up Niagara” a canoe and kayak event that takes place in Beaver Island on July 24th.
A Niagara River Greenways Commission event that features a non-competitive paddle from Little Beaver Island site around East River Marsh site returning back to Little Beaver Island, a 4.8 mile journey.


Any group or organization wishing to participate in the July 4th Parade or “Nationl Night Out” are asked to call the Recreation office at 773-9680.
