Wastewater Department

The Grand Island Wastewater Treatment Facility and administrative office is located in the southeast corner of Buckhorn State Park on approximately 17.5 acres of land and is designed to handle a domestic sewage flow of 3.5 million gallons of sewage per day. After undergoing advanced secondary treatment and disinfection, effluent is discharged to the Niagara River at the northern terminus of Grand Island.

The goal of the operation of the treatment facility is to meet or exceed stringent effluent discharge requirements as set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In addition to the treatment plant, the Department also manages the conveyance of domestic sewage by means of maintaining twenty lift stations and associated appurtenances and piping located in various locations through out the town.

The Treatment facility is operated by NYS certified Grade 3A operators. Under the advice and expertise of a Sanitary Chemist, their job is to monitor and adjust the treatment process on a continual basis making sure to meet permitted effluent discharge parameters.

Maintenance personnel are charged with maintaining and repairing all pumps, motors and any related equipment involved in the collection, conveyance and treatment of domestic sewage.
