New
York State Thruway Authority Announces South Grand Island Bridges, Northbound,
Deck Replacement Project to begin in March 2010.
Beginning March 14, 2010, weather
permitting, the deck of the Northbound South Grand Island Bridge will be
replaced as part of the South Grand Island Bridge rehabilitation project.
Delays are expected during construction.
The Northbound South Grand Island
Bridge will be closed nightly, Sunday through Thursday* as follows (except
holidays):
Sunday,
March 14 – Wednesday, May 26 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tuesday,
June 1 – Wednesday, September 1 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tuesday,
September 7 – Thursday, October 28 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
*These dates and times are subject to change,
depending on weather and construction activities.
Northbound
traffic will be detoured onto the adjacent Southbound bridge; two-way traffic
will be maintained on the Southbound bridge.
Each direction of traffic will be reduced from
two lanes to one lane.
During
the Northbound bridge closure, two southbound entrance ramps, Grand Island
Boulevard and South State (Beaver Island) Parkway will also be closed. A detour to Whitehaven Road will be posted.

Motorists are reminded to obey all
traffic control devices. A new
traffic signal will be installed on I-190 southbound on Grand Island prior to
the South Bridge to assist emergency vehicles responding to calls during
construction.
The
New York State Thruway Authority appreciates motorists’ and residents’
patience during this $48 million infrastructure improvement project.

Construction
Zone Information:

The
construction zone speed limit will be posted at 35 mph during nightly bridge
closures.
·
Fines
are doubled for speeding in construction areas.
·
Over-width
vehicle restrictions apply.
·
Motorists
should plan for traffic delays.
·
During
construction, motorists should travel with caution; new traffic patterns will be
in place.
·
The
Southbound bridge will accommodate two-way traffic in a single lane per
direction configuration.
·
Motorists
are advised to watch for on-coming traffic & must stay in their lane.
